There are various ways to execute sustainable practices in the workplace. As an integrated oil palm player, IOI Corporation Berhad (IOI) does not only look inwards of its own palm oil supply chain, the company also looks at other channels where sustainability practices can be put into action. One of the focuses is on IOI’s current paper supply chain.

On 29 November 2019, IOI invited Dr Leong Yeun Yoong, a partner from Wayy Consulting and co-founder of Natural Ease on 29 November 2019, who gave a valuable talk on Understanding Your Paper Supply Chain: Managing Environmental, Social and Reputational Risks at IOI’s headquarters. Dr Leong explained the different standards in sustainable paper production and their roles in ensuring paper are produced in a responsible manner as well as the difference in sustainable and non-sustainable paper production and its respective impacts on the environment. One of the common ways is to check for the endorsement of sustainability of the paper product – certification by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The FSC is an international non-profit, multi-stakeholder organization, established in 1993 to promote responsible management of the world's forests. IOI currently uses FSC-certified paper in its operations for the past 10 years and also in the printing of its Sustainability Reports.

This action supports low carbon footprint and is in-line with IOI’s pledge towards the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), 13 (Climate Action) and 15 (Life on Land). IOI hopes to encourage its suppliers, internal and external stakeholders to adopt responsible procurement of FSC-certified paper products.
