IOI Bio-Energy Sdn Bhd (IOIBE) has emerged as the Winner in Renewable Energy in the Cogeneration category during the coveted National Energy Awards (NEA) held on 11 September 2021. During the virtual award ceremony officiated by the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Yang Berhormat Datuk Seri Takiyuddin bin Hassan, IOIBE walked away with a trophy and cash prize of RM40,000 in recognition of the enhancement made to its steam boiler.

The award-winning steam boiler was designed, constructed, installed and commissioned by IOIBE’s in-house steam engineers in October 2019, and utilises empty fruit bunches fibres and palm kernel shells as fuel to generate power. The steam boiler’s enhanced design help to improve IOIBE’s overall energy efficiency while decreasing greenhouse gas emissions and minimising the impact on the environment. This is the second NEA award after IOI Edible Oils Sdn Bhd (IOIEO) clinched the trophy for Energy Management in Large Building category in 2018. Both IOIBE and IOIEO are located in Sandakan, Sabah.

The NEA 2021 returned for the fourth consecutive year and was organised by the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources. It is one of Malaysia’s most prestigious awards that drives the sustainable energy agenda. This year, the organiser received 228 applicants in 19 sub-categories vying for recognition for their renewable energy and energy efficiency initiatives. In total, 18 winners and 14 runners-up were selected by a team of experienced judges through a rigorous and stringent evaluation process.

Going forward, IOIBE will continue to strive for renewable energy leadership, which is in line with IOI Corporation Berhad’s (IOI) commitment to reduce its overall carbon output through the IOI Climate Change Action initiative ("CCAi") and by integrating the practices of the 7Rs (Rethink, Repurpose, Recycle, Reuse, Reduce, Recover and Repair) of the Circular Economy at the workplace.
